The 5 Ws
Who? What? When? Where? Why?
Cara a Cara came about as a desire to bring change to an industry that has seen so little of it. There’d been much chatter about the “booming” mezcal world, and we kept seeing new brands appear on a daily basis. We wondered, with all this buzz, what will the mezcal communities look like in 10, 20, 30 years?
Instead of standing on the sidelines, hoping for change, we decided take action. We embarked on this journey to try to generate a positive impact. And build something without compromising future mezcalero generation’s ability to do so.
We started by visiting the communities in Oaxaca that make it. During one of these visits, we encountered a real problem. Droughts are becoming more widespread and prevalent in the region. The Morales Garcia family moved away from their home atop the hills of San Dionisio Ocotepec, due to dried out wells that prevented them from continuing the tradition of making mezcal. This was the spark we needed to take action. It was in this moment that we decided to take the plunge. We decided to focus on solving real problems with practical solutions. There are many challenges awaiting, and we intend to affront them face to face.
